What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a safe, holistic, manual approach to medicine, which aims to assist our body with its natural self-healing process. Osteopaths believe that the human body has all the necessary elements to attain, and maintain, optimal health. This self-healing system enables our body to recover from injury and disease. Weaknesses and imbalances which occur in the framework of the body, may compromise the health of the whole body.

Osteopaths assess the framework of the body (bones, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue) to identify the underlying source of weakness and imbalance. Gentle, manual techniques are then used in order to ease pain, reduce swelling, improve mobility and promote self-healing.

What can Osteopaths treat?

Osteopathic treatment aims to treat the person and not just the condition. Any presenting problem will be considered within the context of the whole body and how it may be affected. Osteopathy has become best known for the treatment of back problems, although many other conditions can be successfully treated with the help of osteopathy including:

  • Back pain & sciatica
  • Neck & shoulder pain
  • Stiff & painful joints
  • Sports injuries
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Generalised aches & pains during & after pregnancy
  • Postural & stress related pain
  • Tension headaches & migraine prevention
  • Trapped & pinched nerves
  • Tennis & Golfers' elbow
  • Arthritic & rheumatic pain
  • Fibromyalgia

Your first osteopathy appointment

Finchley osteopathy - trapped nerve

At your first appointment, a detailed medical history will be taken to identify all factors affecting your current health, including information about your lifestyle and diet. All your details will be handled with the strictest confidentiality.

A physical examination will assist in identifying the source of your problem. The case history and examination together will enable me to formulate a diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

A variety of stretching, mobilizing and manipulative techniques will be used to facilitate your body's ability to heal itself. Other lifestyle, dietary, and exercise advice may be provided to prevent recurrence of the condition.

A full explanation of both the source of your condition and its treatment will be provided in order to enable you to take an active role in your own healing process. Please feel free to ask questions at any time during the consultation.
